Respiratory Techniques
The aim of these techniques is to modulate baroreceptor and chemoreceptor input.
This shifts autonomic balance via breath timing.
PLEASE NOTE:
Everyone’s physiology is different, and your own body’s reaction to techniques may vary. These are guidelines only, and people with cardiovascular, respiratory, or seizure disorders should practice under supervision and adjust the timing of techniques to match what is best for their personal physiology.
Mobilization → Mobilization
Trigger: Sharpening Breath
Method: Perform 5 cycles of sharp nasal inhalation (1s), followed by a rapid “ha!” mouth exhale (1s).
Effect: Maintains sympathetic tone with rhythmic release of excess arousal. Prevents dysregulation by offloading stress hormones without collapsing drive.
Mobilization → Socialization
Trigger: Softening Breath
Method: Inhale through the nose for 4s, pause 1s, exhale through pursed lips for 8s.
Effect: Extended exhale activates baroreceptors and increases parasympathetic influence, reducing heart rate variability, increases high‑frequency HRV component (0.15–0.40 Hz).
Mobilization → Immobilization
Trigger: Grave Breath
Method: Inhale normally, then exhale fully and hold breath after exhalation for 6s.
Effect: Induces transient hypoxia and vagal override, useful for initiating a drop into dorsal vagal immobility in a controlled, ritualized way.
Mobilization → Tranquillity
Trigger: Drowsing Exhalation
Method: Inhale slowly for 5 s, exhale with a soft “hmm” hum lasting 8 s.
Effect: Combines vagal stimulation with retained awareness. Tones down sympathetic charge without full collapse.
Mobilization → Integration
Trigger: Balancing Breath
Method: Inhale 4s, hold 2s, exhale 4s. Repeat for 5 rounds.
Effect: Rhythmic breath symmetry stabilizes arousal and enhances sensorimotor readiness—facilitating cognitive-motor integration.
Mobilization → Agitation
Trigger: Trembling Breath
Method: Short inhale (2s), vibratory tongue-trill or “br-br-br” lip flutter exhale (6s).
Effect: Discharges excess sympathetic energy while introducing destabilizing vibratory tone—initiating transition toward disorganized activation.
Mobilization → Ecstasy
Trigger: Spiral Breath
Method: Inhale deeply through the nose (5s), exhale with an open “ahhh” vocalization rising in pitch.
Effect: Engages all three systems—sympathetic for power, vagal for control, and dorsal for surrender. Pushes the system into integrated arousal.
Socialization → Mobilization
Trigger: Stepped Inhale
Method: Perform 3 short, sharp inhales through the nose (1s each) followed by a forceful single exhale (2s).
Effect: Rapid successive inhales raise heart rate and sympathetic tone, priming fight-flight activation from a calm baseline.
Socialization → Immobilization
Trigger: Collapsing Breath
Method: Exhale fully and hold the breath at the bottom for 8 seconds, then resume with a shallow inhale.
Effect: Simulates the physiological onset of dorsal shut-down by dropping CO₂ and interrupting normal vagal rhythm.
Socialization → Tranquillity
Trigger: Dwelling Breath
Method: Inhale through nose for 5s, slight pause, exhale through nose for 7s, no pause.
Effect: Extends parasympathetic dominance while deepening stillness without invoking threat or withdrawal.
